VCWoman Achieve Mentor Spotlight | Liz Russell
We are so excited to introduce you to an ongoing series where we celebrate the success and achievements of the amazing members of Woman Achieve. Meet Liz Russell one of our mentors!
The Venture Center: What inspired you to participate in this program?
Liz Russell:
I recently retired from my second career act, assisting small businesses in the areas of business planning and expansion, access to capital, and government contracting. Although I was ready to step away from full-time employment, I absolutely loved assisting entrepreneurs—particularly women, who face unique barriers to resources. VCWoman Achieve allows me to continue to engage with a strong network of fierce women who are committed to not only their own success but that of their peers.
What value has the mentorship program brought to you both personally and professionally?
One of my goals in transitioning from full-time employment to independent consulting is to stay relevant and useful. I’ve been at this thing called entrepreneurship long enough to have a sixth sense for opportunities and threats. Guiding others along the path keeps my own senses sharp, and participating in this cohort ensures I continue to be surrounded by smart, supportive, capable women.
What growth have you seen in both your mentee and yourself throughout this program?
As soon as I got to know Kristin, I realized she is the complete package: professional, mature, experienced, community-minded, and proactive. Because she does so many things so well and enjoys a high profile in the local business and nonprofit community, she has a lot of demands for her time and talents. It has been a privilege watching her develop a values-based decision process for taking on new projects and maximizing her impact.
What advice would you give to those interested in applying for this program?
Whether you’re considering participating as a mentor or mentee, you will get out of this program as much—if not more!— as you put in to it. It does require some time, but the program is structured in a way that most professional women can work the meetings and meetups into their schedule. If you’re accepted into the program, commit to it fully and take advantage of all the resources Mimi, Abigail, and the other women will bring your way.
